Loughor Viaduct

Client

Network Rail

Project Description

Prior to its reconstruction in 2013 Loughor Viaduct was an eighteen span Grade 2 Listed Structure carrying the single track South Wales main line over the estuary. The bridge comprised timber trestle substructures supporting a metallic deck type structure with timber deck. Network Rail wanted to re-double the line and engaged Cass Hayward to consider the feasibility of this option. The structural assessment concluded that the structure could not be practicably strengthened and so the commission was extended to consider the viability of reconstruction and methodology. To inform the feasibility study, extensive engagement with interested stakeholders was necessary.
